A Peek into my Morning Routine

My morning routine used to be simple. I'd get ready, grab a quick breakfast, and rush off to my next class or meeting. Does this sound familiar? I prioritized sleep and efficiency without considering slowing down.

Sleep is extremely important to me since I don't drink caffeine or take naps. I make sure to get at least 8-9 hours minimum every night. According to a 2016 study, having "proper sleep and circadian rhythms during the early stages of life are necessary for a successful life" (1). Sufficient sleep is also great for your long-term health and can potentially minimize mental health disorders according to Why We Sleep.

As my schedule has shifted over the last 2 years, I've been able to optimize my mornings, so I stay alert and focused throughout the day. There are numerous articles and studies about creating habits and routines in the morning. Successful entrepreneurs follow a set number of habits to maintain productivity. Common themes revolve around mindfulness practices and lists. Here is an overview of my morning:

[9:15 AM] Wake up + Journal

I use a single alarm to get up. Since I keep my phone on airplane mode at night, I don't check any messages or emails, but instead, write out my dreams in a journal. It's a great memory recollection exercise to try when you wake up.

[9:16 - 9:50 AM] Meditation

Insight Timer is a great app to use if you want to pair a timer with soft tunes. If I use a guided meditation, then I'll go on YouTube to find one that interests me at the moment.

[9:51 - 10:36 AM] Yoga/Workout

Fortunately, I figured out that if I do this each morning, I'm automatically more focused and energized throughout the day. If I'm even the slightest bit tired when I'm up, doing a quick workout seems to solve that issue.

[10:37 - 11 AM] Shower + Protein Shake

I drink a protein shake at least 3x a week. Some mornings after yoga, I like to eat/drink something small, so I shift away from my shake. I usually mix fruits, seeds, protein powder, and a few other ingredients to make my power shake.

[11:01 - 11:10 AM] Check-in!

It's great to incorporate a quick check-in and express gratitude early in the day. I typically ask myself these questions:

-How are you feeling?

-What's your goal for today?

-What are you grateful for?

Of course, there will be 1-2 days in a month where I deviate from this schedule, and that's okay! It's important to start slow with 1 habit for lasting change. I've been following this loosely since last year, but I've been more strict about it since quarantine started. Comment below if you have any neat habits you incorporate in your morning!
